Lon Strickler of Phantoms & Monsters recently received the following report from a man who said he saw “a purplish-colored humanoid figure about six feet tall with wings” near Greensburg, Indiana, in the summer of 2014.
Hello, sir. This incident happened around nine years ago in 2014 during the summer. At that time, we lived in a small subdivision near Greensburg, Indiana (Decatur County). My house was in front of a small forest area, so the backyard is a large clearing with lots of trees behind it, which is bordered by a fence my father built. In the backyard, there is also a greenhouse and a shed. Behind the trees is a small trailer home park.
I remember going outside on a cloudy day to get my dog since he was outside. He was outside for way longer than usual, so I got worried and went to take a look.
As I went down the balcony steps to go into the backyard my dog instantly ran towards the trees and started to bark. I looked up at the trees and saw a purplish-colored humanoid figure about six feet tall with wings. The creature most likely saw me, and it climbed through the trees and bushes and attempted to fly up, but it couldn’t since the trees were so thick. I ran up the stairs to the balcony and watched my dog continue to bark. The creature had disappeared, so I was worried about where it had gone.
I’m not sure what happened after this as my memory is quite foggy of this incident, but I’m guessing that I ran inside and hid.
I have no idea what this was, but I was intrigued by the winged humanoid sightings in the Chicago area and thought I’d write you. The shade of this being was distinctly purple in color and the membrane wings were bat shaped. The head was fairly large compared to the body, but that was the extent of any details that I could see. It never made any sounds. I didn’t see the wings fully unfurled.
Strickler told The Singular Fortean Society that he was able to conduct a short interview with the witness.
“I briefly talked to the Indiana witness. He didn’t have much more to say,” Strickler said. “He was very nervous, from what I gathered. Anyway, he sounded sincere. I asked about the brain fog, and he said that it had never happened to him before or since.”
The “brain fog” mentioned here is similar to the experience of another witness who recently reported her encounter with a tall, red-eyed creature while driving through Camp Pine Woods near the Des Plaines River in Illinois last September.
“I definitely had this weird brain fog or just a sense of, I don’t know, being out of place,” she said of her experience. “I want to say it was because of stress, but this just felt weird. I was just like, what the heck? I feel weird.”
Greensburg, Indiana is approximately 60 miles south of Prairie Creek Reservoir, around which several sightings of winged humanoids and a series of glowing orb sightings have been reported.
Those reports can be found in our timeline, linked below.
Because of its proximity to other sighting locations, the creature described in this report could be related to the larger Lake Michigan Mothman phenomenon. Those sightings are commonly reported within a few-hundred-mile radius surrounding Lake Michigan, including every state bordering the great lake.
The sightings ostensibly began in the spring of 2017, but more historical accounts are being reported as more people become aware of the phenomenon. They generally take place in the evening or at night, often in or near a park or natural area, and around water. Witnesses consistently describe a large gray, brown, or black, bat or bird-like creature, sometimes with glowing or reflective red, yellow, green, or orange eyes, and humanoid features such as arms and legs are often reported. Some witnesses have reported feeling intense fear and an aura of evil emanating from the creature they encountered. Many of the sightings are also of something seen only briefly or are described only as a flying creature with few details, which leaves open the possibility that a misidentified large bird—such as a heron or crane—or some type of anomalous avian species could explain some, although certainly not all, of the encounters. A number of associated high strangeness incidents have also occurred alongside the creature sightings. These include reports of UFOs, other anomalous flying creatures and mysterious humanoids, parapsychological phenomena, and bizarre events experienced by those investigating the sightings.
